Surf Trip Packing List for a Luxury Ocean Holiday
A luxury surf trip still needs the boring things. Pack for the water, not the photograph.
Pack for the water, not the Instagram photo
A luxury surf trip still needs the boring things. Rash guard, reef-safe sun protection, appropriate surf equipment and a way to protect your phone from water are more useful than another outfit.
If you are travelling with your own board, check airline rules and local transport before leaving home.
Water kit
Board or rental plan, leash, fins, wax suited to water temperature, rash guard, wetsuit if required, reef-safe sunscreen and a compact changing towel are the basics.
- Board (or a confirmed rental) and a padded board bag
- Leash, fins and wax suited to the water temperature
- Rash guard and, where needed, a wetsuit of the right thickness
- Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat
- Reef boots for shallow reef breaks, for example in Bali or the Mentawai Islands
- A small first-aid kit for reef cuts
- A compact changing towel or poncho
Recovery kit
Hydration bottle, light layers, comfortable footwear, sleep essentials and anything you normally use for muscle recovery can make a bigger difference than another pair of shoes.
Luxury does not mean overpacking
Choose a small wardrobe that works for breakfast, beach, dinner and a nice hotel. The ocean should be the star, not your suitcase.
The final check
Destination climate → water temperature → board availability → airline rules → local equipment rental → medical/travel essentials → weather forecast.

Quick planning checklist
- Check the exact season for your travel dates and the specific coast or island you plan to visit.
- Match the activity to your experience level; famous does not mean beginner-friendly.
- Verify current transport, access rules, marine regulations and operator availability.
- Choose accommodation for location and experience quality, not just star rating.
- Leave flexible time in the itinerary because ocean conditions can change.
