Luxury Surf & Dive Holidays: The World's Best Ocean Destinations
What separates a luxury ocean holiday from a beach holiday, and a shortlist of the destinations where the water and the stay are equally exceptional.
The ocean should be the reason you go
There are beach holidays, and then there are holidays built around the water. The difference is simple: on an ocean-first trip, the beach is not just scenery. It determines where you stay, when you travel, how long you stay and what you do each day.
For surfers, that might mean waking before breakfast to check the swell. For divers, it might mean a first boat departure before the wind changes. For freedivers, it can mean finding the calmest water and letting the rest of the day slow down.
Add a beautiful villa, a good dinner, a spa treatment and a little privacy, and you get something better than a luxury beach holiday. You get a luxury ocean holiday.
Our shortlist of destinations
The Maldives
The Maldives is one of the easiest places to understand this concept. Surf breaks sit around atolls, while diving is central to the destination’s identity. Official Maldives tourism information highlights reef surfing, warm water and multiple surf areas, while Fuvahmulah is particularly notable for pelagic diving.
Fiji
Fiji is different. It is a surf destination first for many travellers, with Cloudbreak and the Mamanuca Islands offering serious waves alongside reef and resort experiences. Tourism Fiji describes the region as having options from beginner-friendly waves to advanced reef breaks.
Bali
Bali gives you variety. You can surf, dive, eat extremely well, book a private villa and build an itinerary around nearby Nusa Penida. Indonesia’s official tourism site lists beginner areas such as Kuta and Sanur and more advanced areas including Uluwatu.
Portugal
Portugal is the European wildcard. With a long Atlantic coastline and destinations such as Ericeira, Peniche and Nazaré, it works particularly well for travellers who want a serious surf trip without leaving Europe.
How to choose
If surfing is the priority, start with Fiji, Bali, Portugal, the Maldives or Hawaii depending on season and ability.
If diving is the priority, look closely at the Maldives, French Polynesia, Fiji, the Seychelles, Madeira and the wider Indian Ocean. If freediving is central, narrow the list further based on local conditions and qualified support rather than choosing solely on photographs.
If luxury is the priority, ask what luxury actually means to you: a private island, a villa, an exceptional spa, a boat at your disposal, outstanding food or simply being able to walk from your room into beautiful water.
The real luxury is the fit
The best destination is not the one with the biggest marketing budget. It is the one that fits the way you travel.
Before booking, answer five questions:
- What activity matters most?
- What is my ability level?
- Which month am I travelling?
- How much travel time am I willing to accept?
- What kind of luxury do I actually value?
Once you answer those, the world’s map becomes much smaller, and your next ocean holiday becomes much easier to choose. Use the Best by Month planner to check timing, and the destination finder to filter by activity and season.

Quick planning checklist
- Check the exact season for your travel dates and the specific coast or island you plan to visit.
- Match the activity to your experience level; famous does not mean beginner-friendly.
- Verify current transport, access rules, marine regulations and operator availability.
- Choose accommodation for location and experience quality, not just star rating.
- Leave flexible time in the itinerary because ocean conditions can change.
