Best Summer Surf Holidays for Europeans
Summer does not have to mean the same beach every year. Stay close to home, choose an Atlantic island or fly far for warm reef waves.
Summer does not have to mean the same beach every year
European summer is the easiest time to forget that the world is full of coastlines. You can surf at home, take a short Atlantic trip or fly farther for warm water and a completely different culture.
The best choice depends on whether you want convenience, wave quality, water temperature or the feeling of being somewhere genuinely different.
Stay in Europe: Portugal
Portugal is one of the strongest summer choices because of the sheer range of surf locations. Visit Portugal highlights Ericeira, Peniche, Nazaré, the Algarve and other coastal areas.
For a luxury trip, combine surf with a design hotel, seafood, wine, coastal walks and a few slower days. Summer waves are often smaller, which suits learners and longboarders.
Island option: Madeira or the Azores
Madeira adds dramatic volcanic scenery and an excellent non-surf itinerary. The Azores are particularly compelling for travellers who want a wilder Atlantic atmosphere, with ocean adventure combined with hiking and nature.
These trips work well for couples because the holiday does not depend on everyone wanting to surf all day. For a direct comparison, see Azores vs Madeira.
Go long-haul when you want the ocean to dominate
Indonesia, Bali and the Mentawai Islands, Fiji and Hawaii can make sense for experienced surfers who want the destination itself to be the story. Fiji’s Mamanuca Islands, for example, combine world-class reef breaks with a range of other waves and water activities.
For Europeans, the longer flight means the trip should justify itself. Stay longer, plan fewer transfers and build in recovery time.

Quick planning checklist
- Check the exact season for your travel dates and the specific coast or island you plan to visit.
- Match the activity to your experience level; famous does not mean beginner-friendly.
- Verify current transport, access rules, marine regulations and operator availability.
- Choose accommodation for location and experience quality, not just star rating.
- Leave flexible time in the itinerary because ocean conditions can change.
